SA Women’s Outreach Van

Female volunteers stock a van with clothes, blankets, water, and bag lunches as they head out with The Salvation Army Crossroads Community Church Women’s Outreach program. From 9 pm until 2 am nightly they’ll drive the van along a route in Edmonton’s inner city watching for women out on the streets who flag them down needing food, clothing, or just a safe place to warm up and talk.

Beulah Alliance Church, through an volunteer team of women, has committed to providing resources for the van on Sunday nights each week.  To learn more how this ministry is impacting our community, go here.

Volunteer opportunities for The Salvation Army Outreach Van:

Sunday night van crew: (female only)

The Sunday night van crew usually consists of between 4 and 6 women who drive the streets of Edmonton in the The Salvation Army women’s ministry van. The team looks for homeless and “working women” in need. Individual jobs on the van include: driver, window (gate-keeper), and 2 to 3 volunteers in the back of the van. These volunteers minister to the women through prayer, supplying basic necessities, sometimes minor medical help, listening ears, clothing, coffee and lunch distribution, as well as distribution of any other supplies we may have. The van goes out Sunday night at exactly 9 pm from The Salvation Army Crossroads Community Church (11661 95 Street NW) and returns around 2 am.   Training happens as someone participates on the van.  A person would generally volunteer 1 to 2 times monthly.

Van Lunch Makers: (great opportunity for MSCs or small groups).

Food is a surprisingly important aspect of our ministry. Lunches that we handout build bridges to hearts. Some people haven’t eaten in days, others don’t know where their next meal will come from. Lunches are a tangible way for us to start conversations, and show God’s love. Lunch makers must be able to commit to supplying between 30 and 40 lunches. Lunches need to be dropped off on Sunday afternoons at the home of the team lead for that night. A person would generally be expected to volunteer once a month.

Lunches can include: sandwiches, juice boxes, a treat, fruit, or whatever else you or your team would like to supply. There are no food restrictions.

Van Prep Crew: (hours and days vary depending on crew availability). Male and female volunteers welcome.

  • Washing exterior van
  • Washing interior of van
  • Replenishing supplies
  • Organizing supply bins
  • Ensuring van is fueled (gas card available)

Prayer Ministers:

Prayer is a major aspect of this ministry. So much of what is happening out on the streets has deep spiritual roots. We are desperately requiring those who will stand in the gap to fight for God’s women out on the streets. Our ministers are welcome to come to the church and pray as we are out ministering (minimum group of two), or to minister at home in prayer as prompted by the Holy Spirit. Teams need to be covered in prayer before they go out and while they are out.
